Effective 9/19/2023,
ASONY has implemented its pre-covid pricing approach -
all inclusive pricing. Sales Tax is now part of the advertised menu price.
We ended the Co-op Wellness surcharge and included Sales Tax in the price
of the item, meaning the price you see on the menu is the total price you are
charged. If you would like to tip the crew, we have a tip jar in the front and
you can tip on credit card. The tip options remain - 0%, 10%, 15%, Other.
Tipping is pretty confusing and frustrating these days.
If you can afford to
tip the crew and want to, please do. Your generous tips allow the team to
get the needed supplement to live here and take care of you. Even as an
employee-owned worker cooperative, a living wage has become more out of reach
even with our new pricing structure, so your continued tipping is needed and
greatly appreciated.
If you would like to join our team, we are always looking for great people. Please
download our
application
and email it to us along with your resume to -
jobs@aSliceOfNY.com.
We have a chill environment, work hard, and take care of each other. We are a
worker cooperative, meaning the owners work with you every day. Come by for a
slice and see what you think.

ASONY is bringing back its pre-covid pricing approach - all inclusive pricing.
Sales Tax will now be part of the advertised menu price. We stopped this during
covid due to many things. We look forward to continuing our original model.

ASONY is celebrating its 17 year anniversary on Tues, Sept 19th. We will be
bringing back our $2 slices all day (4 slices max) and taking 20% of all baked
items. We hope to see you there!
9/9/2023
ASONY had to close on Sat due to a water main break. Sunnvyale was open all day.
We are back in business Sunday. Way to go Santa Clara water guys!!!
9/5/2023
ASONY is celebrating its 17 year anniversary on Sept 19, 2023. $2 slcies all
day and reduced prices on baked items. We hope you will join us!
6/15/2023
ASONY charges an 8% Co-op Wellness service charge on all orders. This charge is not
a tip. The cooperative’s members and team met in Dec 2022 and voted unanimously
to split this charge 50/50, including overhead and taxes. This ends up being
42.5/57.5, with 42.5% paid out to employees providing customer service
(including any manager on shift), and 57.5% retained by the cooperative to help
adjust for inflation and for wages. We don't know if this is enough to stabilize
our business, we will be monitoring it closely and communicating this with our
team. If we simply built this surcharge into the menu price, we would not be
able to easily track it and adjust accordingly. We hope you will support us
and the team.
Tipping is pretty confusing and frustrating these days.
If you can afford to
tip the crew and want to, please do. The changes we made will maintain
current salaries, but we don't have the ability to pay our team more. Your
generous tips allow the team to get the needed supplement to live here and
take care of you. We can keep menu prices down with increased tips. Even as
an employee-owned worker cooperative, a living wage has become more out of reach
even with our new pricing structure, so your continued tipping is needed and
greatly appreciated.
Even prior to our transition to a worker cooperative in 2017, we have always
tried to be as transparent as possible with our customers. Some would say we’re
being too transparent, but that’s how we operate.

Our Sunnyvale shop has beer flowing on its taps once again! We celebrate local
brewers and currently have Hen House, Fort Point, Drakes, and 21st Amendment.
Come in and grab a glass or a picture. Bring your ID as we card *everyone*!

Our San Jose/Santa Clara shop will offer heart shaped pies today! They will cost
an extra $5 and you need to let us know if you want the pie cut. We don't want
to cut the heart if you want to see the heart in tact, so please let us know.
Have a less stressful Valentine with us. ❤️
2/8/2023
Our Sunnyvale shop will be open this Sunday for Super Bowl. Please call in your
order ahead of time to reserve your spot. It will be busy, so call tomorrow to
plan for the big game. San Jose will of course be open as well. There are already
pre-orders, so call when you can!
1/3/2023
Our San Jose/Santa Clara shop hours remain the same (open Tues-Sun).
Our Sunnyvale shop new hours are -- Thurs- 3-9pm, Fri- 3-10pm, Sat - 11am-10pm
(closed Sun-Wed).
In SUnnyvale, please consider planning pizza nights on Thus-Sat. Sunnyvale is
struggling to stay open, so if you want us here, we need you to work with us
and visit when we are open. Thanks for all the support over the years and
during the pandemic.
We also have new pricing. Not all items have gone up, but most have. We still
have our 8% Wellness surcharge (now called the Co-op Wellness surcharge).
We need to cover the enormous food and supply costs we have endured these past
couple years. We need your patience and support now more than ever.
We ask you to
please continue to tip the crew. We can keep menu prices down with increased tips.
Even as an employee-owned worker cooperative, a living wage is not possible with
our current pricing structure, so your continued tipping is greatly appreciated.
We want to collaborate with you, our customer, to create the extraordinary expereince
you want; please provide any and all feedback to us

12/25/2022
ASONY will be closed from Dec 25-Jan 3.
Our San Jose/Santa Clara shop will be open on Tues, Jan 3 at 11am -- regular hours.
Our Sunnyvale shop will begin its new hours. It will open on Thurs, Jan 5 at 3pm.
Sunnvyale will only be open on Thurs, Fri, and Sat. for a while. We need more
business there. Please consider planning pizza nights on Thus-Sat. We only stay open
if you want us to. Thanks for all the support over the years and during the pandemic.
On Jan 3, you will see new pricing. Not all items have gone up, but most have.
We need to cover the enormous food and supply costs we have endured these past
couple years. We need your patience and support now more than ever.
We ask you to
please continue to tip the crew. We can keep menu prices down with increased tips.
The alternative to tipping is a higher, all-inclusive menu price, which we can do.
We would love to hear from you on what you would like to see.

It would create the notion of a menu item price funding the business to pay a
living wage to its workers. Even as an employee-owned worker cooperative, a
living wage is not possible with our current pricing structure. Thank you for
your continued support of our crew and tipping as generously as you have. We want
to collaborate with you, our customer, to create the extraordinary expereince
you want; please provide any and all feedback to us

REDUCED HOURS IN SUNNYVALE
To our awesome friends and community.
Due to ongoing rising costs, reduced business revenue, and staffing shortages,
we are unable to keep current hours at our Sunnyvale location. For now, Sunnyvale
will be closed on Sundays beginning 12/11. In January we will experiment with
closing Tuesdays-Wednesdays. Our team will continue to provide a great experience
on Thursdays-Saturdays, and we will have Sunnyvale open for Super Bowl Sunday on 2/12!
Our Stevens Creek shop continues to hold regular business hours. On days
Sunnyvale is closed, please call there to order 408-247-5423. We are open until
10pm (10:30pm on Fri/Sat).
We hope to resume "normal" hours here in Sunnyvale when we have both the staff
and the business to support it. If you or someone you know would like to work
with us, please email jobs@asliceofny.com. We offer a living wage and are an
employee-owned worker cooperative.
MENU INCREASE COMING SOON
In addition to reduced hours in Sunnyvale, we are increasing prices. For the
health of our small business and our team, this is something we must do. Our costs
continue to rise and we can no longer absorb it. We know we’re not alone.
Times continue to be difficult for so many, and we truly appreciate everyone who
have remained by our side throughout the years. As an organization, we have
strived to be as transparent as possible since opening our doors in 2006, and
will continue to do so.
We hope to serve our community far into the future. Please follow us online
to stay in touch. Thank you!
Why do we have an 8% Employee Wellness Surcharge?
Some have asked about this surcharge so we’d like to further explain beyond
the short answer of “it all goes to the crew.” It’s true that customers pay
for everything. If we did not have customers, there would be no product to
make or employees to make it.
This surcharge truly does all go to the crew.
We implemented this surcharge back in 2020 for the crew. With food costs prices
increasing at alarming rates, we also need to do a menu increase for the business.
Please know that this 8% goes directly to our team. Even prior to our transition
to a worker cooperative in 2017, we have always tried to be as transparent as
possible with our supporters. Some would say we’re being too transparent, but
that’s how we operate. Thank you for reading this, and thanks to everyone for
16 years of support!
All employees are 100% vaccinated. We offer indoor dining in Sunnyvale and
a three outdoor tables in San Jose/Santa Clara.
Here is our
Frozen Personal Pie Guide on cooking instructions.
We are always looking for the right people that want to be part of our team.
We are employee-owned and operated, encourge feedback, and look for exceptional
people. If that is you, send us a note.
12/1/2022
It has been a difficult 2.5 years. We have seen substantial increases in our food
costs. Compounding that pressure, our revenue in Sunnyvale has not returned to
levels that support its operation. Over the next few weeks, we will be adjusting
the days when Sunnvyale will operate. We will also be implementing a menu increase
to recover from the rising costs of goods and to allow us to give raises
to our team. This is difficult for all of us. We will continue to provide
current information as it becomes available. Please stay tuned and thank you
for your ongoing support.
10/4/2022
It's been 2.5 years since San Jose/Santa Clara opened its doors. On
March 21, 2020, we locked our front doors and moved our slice display to the
back of the shop. Today, we opened our doors and lodaed up our display. We now
have three tables outside, and we welcome you to come in, check out our slices, and
have a look around the shop. We've missed you! We will consider indoor dining
in the future, but for now, outdoor seating is what we offer. Thanks again.
4/25/2022
Sunnyvale has opened up much of its indoor dining room and San Jose/Santa Clara
has two outdoor tables (still no indoors access). Thanks for supporting us
throughout the pandemic. We are still struggling with having enough staff,
so please do bear with us. Thanks for your patience.

Public Health Update
Effective 3/2/22, Santa Clara County officially
lifted indoor mask mandates in most private businesses, but strongly
suggests wearing a mask in public spaces. Our team members will continue to wear
masks during an assessment period. We encourage our customers to wear a mask
when picking up their order in Sunnyvale but will no longer require it.
We are not providing indoor seating and our San Jose/Santa Clara shop continues
to serve through our pick-up window. We will keep you updated as things progress
and we are always appreciative of your support!

Today is National Pizza Day. Yelp created a
"Top 100 places for pizza" and eight Bay Area companies
made the list, with the top spot held by fellow worker cooperative and cherrished business
The Cheeseboard Collective.
ASONY was honored to be ranked 27. Thanks for your continued support!
2/2/2022
Thanks to the San Francisco Chronicle for the recognition of being a
"Top San Jose Restaurant"

Product updates. First, we wanted to let you know we have started using cremini
mushrooms a couple weeks ago. While these are 40% more expensive to us, we believe
they are better. We welcome your
feedback.
Second, various pork and chicken products will become more expensive due to
the California law
Proposition 12 and there will likely be shortages. We will
keep you posted. We plan on holding our prices at this time. If you can think
of other ways to improve your experience with us, please let us know. Thank you.
12/18/2021
Thank you for again honoring us as your favorite pizza shop in Metro! We appreciate
your ongoing support and confidence in our ability to make you happy. Have a
safe holiday season!
11/29/2021
SAN JOSE SHOP UPDATE- We have heard loud and clear -
we need to fix
our ordering and pickup process when it gets busy. We have ordered a second
terminal and will be exploring ways to bring you back into the shop. We will
create new signs to help with the flow. Please be patient and give us
feedback.

The Mercury News just opened up voting for Best of 2022. We hope you will take the opportunity to
enter "A Slice of New York" as your choice for favorite pizza!
11/15/2021
SUNNYVALE OUTDOOR DINING UPDATE- Unfortunately, our customers are no longer
able to use the outdoor dining space at Tasty Mob next door. There was too much
trash and not enough purchasing of their goods (food, beer, desserts). They
returned our picnic tables, and we are now to-go only again. Thanks for your support.

On November 10, 2021, the Silicon Valley Business Journal hosted its annual 2021

their Community Impact award for his
role in leading the Santa Clara
agrihood development project, co-founding the non-profit
Catalyze SV,
and leading local advocacy efforts for the
worker cooperative model. It is quite an honor to be recognized
by the Business Journal, and we are all deeply honored and humbled by the award.

directly next door at
Tasty Mob Market. If you look closely, you can even see our tables! They welcome
our customers to take their slices and whole pies to hang out and relax! Our beer
cannot be consumed over there (sorry), but they do offer beer there.
9/13/2021
ASONY is proud to announce our staff is 100% vaccinated. We are still not
allowing for indoor dining at this time. Thank you for your understanding
and support.
8/23/2021-8/30/2021
We are CLOSED for Summer Break! We will be closed for a week. Thank you for
your support and for giving us the means to take care of the team and give
everyone a paid week off! We did this last year, and with your support, we plan
on making this an annual thing.
8/3/2021
Based on Santa Clara County mandates, effective today
ALL customers (vaccinated
or not) are required to wear a mask when entering our Sunnyvale location. Without
a mask, we cannot serve you (and we want to!). Thanks for your understanding.
7/28/2021
The Board met today and unanimously agreed to update the ASONY COVID-19
Vaccination Policy as follows-
Every employee is required to either get a COVID-19 vaccine or submit a weekly
COVID test to management. The policy goes into effect immediately.
We will continue to share any policies that may impact you or your decision to
support our business. We strongly believe in a highly transparent process.
7/16/2021
At this time, we will continue our masking policy where all employees will be
required to wear a mask for now. With the rise of COVID cases, the delta variant,
and other variants on their way, we will continue to do everything we can to protect our
team. We encourage all customers to wear a mask, even if vaccinated. If you are not
vaccinated, please go to the
SCC Free Vaccination site. Thanks for your support and please stay safe.
7/5/2021
90% of our employees are fully vaccinated. Our Health and Safety Committee has
met multiple times to discuss what is appropriate for our team. The future policy
we are looking to implement will look something like this-
- Vaccinated employees can choose to wear their mask at work
- Vaccinated employees will be required to get a COVID-19 test every two months
- Non-vaccinated employees must wear their mask at work
- Non-vaccinated employees will be required to get a COVID-19 test monthly
- When dealing with the public, everyone is *highly encouraged* to wear a mask
We would like to hear your feedback. Email us
here.
6/21/2021
Effective today,
we are no longer requiring our SJ/SC customers to wear a mask.
For our Sunnvayle customers, fully vaccinated customers can enter with or without
a mask.
Unvaccinated customers are still required to wear a mask. If you are not
wearing a mask when you enter, we will assume are are fully vaccinated. If you need a
mask, we will gladly provide one for you. Thanks for your support and understanding.
6/15/2021
We continue to require all customers to arrive in masks. Even if you are
vaccinated, we are requiring all customers to wear a mask. This is true for both
shops, even when interacting with through the window in SJ. We hope you
will support us in this requirement.
6/11/2021
Please note the parking lot in San Jose/Santa Clara is being redone. Park anywhere
and please be patient. We hope this will be done in a week or so.
5/21/2021
Starting today, our San Jose/Santa Clara shop will be open until 10:30pm on
Friday and Saturday nights. We are hoping business supports this change.
5/19/2021
Robert Handa from NBC Bay Area News
did a piece on rehiring in the workplace and
came to
A Slice of New York for a chat.
5/14/2021
Please note that
ALL customers will continue to be required to wear a mask when
either transacting with the crew outside in San Jose or inside in Sunnyvale.
The current CDC guidelines about not wearing masks when fully vaccinated are
not relevant to how ASONY is operating at this time. Please respect our requirements
for every customer to wear a mask when engaging us. Our Health and Safety committee
will be reviewing all County guidelines, and we will update our approach to
operations when appropriate. Thanks for your support during this time.
5/4/2021
ASONY is
requiring all customers (in both shops) to continue to
wear masks when
engaging our team. Specifically, we require customers to wear a mask when transacting
at the San Jose walk-up window even though you are outdoors and
even if you
are fully vaccinated. Basically, it is like being indoors when talking to the
team through the window, so we ask you to please respect our requirement.
If you forget your mask, we can offer you one, but we'd prefer that you bring your own.
3/31/2021

WE ARE OPEN!
We will be taking orders starting around 2pm today (Fri) for tonight as well as
Super Bowl. Please place your order early! Please be patient and expect longer
wait times. Thanks for your support!
2/1/2021
As if this can't get any crazier,
our Sunnyvale shop will be closed for the
next few days (specifically Tues-Thurs, 2/2-2/4) due to one of our crew having
a biking accident (breaking his arm), and we just found out another team member's
wife tested positive for the virus and will quarantine. To be extra safe,
we are retesting everyone in the Sunnyvale "pod" to ensure the team is negative
before returning to work. We hope to be reopen Sunnyvale on Friday, 2/5, so
please check back here for updates (you can also call the shop - 650-938-6969).
The San Jose shop is open normal hours, and we expect wait times to go up. Please
call in your order early (1-2 hours early) so we can make sure to have your order
ready at a time of your choosing. Please also be patient with the San Jose crew
since they will be under more pressure. Thanks for your support!!
1/31/2021
Our Sunnyvale shop will be closed today (Sunday) due to short staffing.
Our crew member and significant other are still quarantining. With our shop
“pod" configuration, we are not moving crew between pods at this time.
1/22/2021
Our Sunnyvale shop will be closed this whole weekend (Fri-Sun, 1/22-1/24) due to
short staffing. One of our crew's family member tested positive and is
quarantining. With our shop “pod" configuration, we are not moving crew between
pods at this time.
Please also be patient with the San Jose crew as we expect this weekend to be
busy with Sunnyvale closed. We will provide updates to our Sunnyvale schedule,
so please stay tuned, and thanks for the support!!
1/12/2021 ==2021==
Here is an article in The Six Fifty that
captures our journey to
becoming a worker cooperative and how we continue to navigate the pandemic
(Jan 2021).
Dec 11-Dec 26, 2020
Thank you for making us part of your takeout rotation all these months! We want
to share some details of our recent timeline and what actions we took in our shops.
Since March 8th we have been very serious about COVID-19, making all orders
to-go, halting indoor and outdoor dining. But with this virus rampant in our
community, it shows us we are all at risk no matter how diligently we are
protecting ourselves and each other.
- Dec 4 (Fri), team member "X" works a full shift (last shift before not feeling well)
- Dec 7 (Mon), "X" is congested and low-grade fever - told to stay home Tues
- Dec 9 (Wed), "X" gets a covid test
- Dec 9 (Wed), unrelated to “X”, team member "Y" gets a rapid covid test
due to cold symptoms, tests negative
- Dec 10 (Thurs evening), "X" informs ASONY of positive result and isolates
- Dec 10, shops close immediately and sanitizes (as usual each night)
- Dec 11 (Fri), all 15 employees exposed to "X" on Dec 4 get rapid test - all negative
- Dec 12 (Sat), team member "Y" in the meantime recovers from cold and is back to work
- Dec 13 (Sun evening), "Y" finds out a household member tests positive -
we send “Y” home to quarantine
- Dec 14 (Mon), "Y" gets another rapid test - negative - clearing the
Sat/Sun crew. "Y" and household quarantine
- Dec 15 (Tues), ASONY implements “pods” to physically separate the crew into
two, no-contact teams
- Dec 15, team member "Z" works in SJ shop and finds out 89 min into shift
about a positive result (from a routine test on Mon). We send "Z" home to
isolate. We verify no close contact with "Z" during that shift, and “Z”
did not work the prior 4 days.
- Dec 15, SJ shop finishes business and sanitizes (as usual each night)
- Dec 16-19, as an added precautionary measure, we test each of the five team
members who worked with "Z" daily for four days. All negative results.
Today, Dec 26, we continue to mandate strict Social Distancing Protocols for
both our team and our customers. We are doing everything we can to keep each
other safe while keeping our business open. We need all of you to help us
and wear a mask every time you come to the pickup window in SJ or come inside
the SV shop. These next few weeks are going to be very hard for our community
at large. Please check to make sure there are no unplanned closures or
updates...and please be patient with our team. We are all under a lot of pressure
to safely do what we do. We thank you for your continued support!
12/11/2020
San Jose/Santa Clara - The Stevens Creek will open at 3pm. Thanks for
understanding. See you then!
12/10/2020
We are back open! Also, Saturday, Dec 12th, we will have a
variety of
slices available for both lunch and dinner. We will
*NOT* customize
any slice. We hope you will by and give them a try. We are going to encourage
you to order quickly (not like the soup nazi, but close) so you will spend
minimal time in the shop. We want to minimize all risks. We may have you wait
outside for your order. We have a wireless speaker outside to call your name or
your slices, so please remember what they are. We will do our best to grab your
name, but if it is busy, we may lose track. Please work with us so we can all
be successful. We are looking forward to sharing slices with your once again.
You will see some standard ones and maybe some off-menu ones (e.g., South Bronx).
12/9/2020
Unfortunately, due to a staffing shortage, our Sunnyvale shop is closed
today, Wed, Dec 9. We will be open at 3pm tormorrow and at 11am on Sat, Dec 12,
for our first Saturday since March!
12/6/2020
On Sat, Dec 12, we will be opening Sunnyvale up for lunch on Saturdays! It has
been over eight months since we have been open for lunch. We will have slices
available. If there is a lot of interest, we will expand our slice selection!
Please give us a call and let us know you are interested so we can plan
accordingly. We hope to see you on Saturday in Sunnyvale. Please also note that
our Santa Clara/San Jose shop is open for lunch every day.
12/1/2020
We are adding sales tax to all orders (previously included in our prices), and
also reducing the temporary surcharge to 8%. We're continuing touchless payment
to provide additional safety, which prevents tips from easily being added to
credit cards. The surcharge fully goes to our crew, minus taxes. We have also
increased base prices on a couple items (subs/heros, large, and slices).
Thank you for
ALL your support, encouragement, positive posts + messages,
patience during longer wait times, and the abundance of smiling eyes directed
our way! It is all needed and appreciated!
In addition, we will be implementing new Social Distancing policies directed by
the County, limiting indoor occupancy in Sunnyvale. While the maximum customers
in the shop will be five (5), we will try to limit it to one person at a time.
Per the County Order, there will be NO queuing up or waiting inside for your
order. We ask that you monitor if someone is in the lobby, come in to pay for
your order, and then wait outside if it is not ready. We will be experimenting
with wireless speakers to see if we can effectively communicate with you.
Please be patient as we try to make it work! Thanks!
11/26--11/27/2020
ASONY will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday. We will open up normal hours
on Sat, 11/28. Please stay safe and thank you for your continued support. Stay
tuned for a couple announcements in December.
11/15/2020
ASONY was interviewed by Dr. Celine Gounder, an epidemiologist and disease expert,
is part of Biden's COVID-19 Task Force/Advisory Board, and is the host of the
podcast
Epidemic. You can see this week's Epidemic podcast (Ep 51) -
Disrupting Restaurants - Part I, and is about 25 minutes long.
10/21/2020
ASONY will NOT have indoor dining at this time. You can read more specifics
in this
SJ Spotlight article, but the basic message is overall safety, which has
always been our priority. In order to keep each other safe and maintain a
space our customers can feel confident in, we do not see indoor dining possible
in Sunnyvale right now. Our Santa Clara/San Jose shop continues to utilize the
small take-out window. We very much appreciate everyone’s ongoing support.
9/19/2020
Today marks our 14-year anniversary! We usually do $2 slices all day, but we
stopped serving slices back in March due to the crappy pandemic. So, we will
still celebrate by offering 20% off all items, AND we will give away mini-cannoli
to everyone! Call your order in *early* and please remember we are call-in only.
Thanks for all your support these past years!
9/14/2020
ASONY is participating in a congressional hearing on Wed, Sept 16, from 12-1pm PST.
It will be live streamed on Facebook Live.
Here are the details of the event.
We hope to see you there!
9/13/2020
Our Sunnyvale shop will be closed today due to short staff. We want to create
and excellent experience, and we cannot do that with limited people. We will
be open again on Tues, 9/15/20. Our San Jose/Santa Clara shop is open normal
hours. Thanks for your understanding and support.
8/25/2020
Both shops have re-opened and are back in action. Thank you for understanding
our team's need to take a short and paid break. We look forward to seeing you
again soon!
8/17--8/24/2020
We are CLOSED for one week. We will reopen on Tuesday, 8/25 in Sunnyvale at 3pm
and San Jose/Santa Clara at 11am.
Here is our
GoFundMe page.
8/13/2020
We know this pandemic is here for a while, and we will be here to serve. But
right now, the crew needs a break.
Next week, we are closing both shops for
a mandatory paid week off. Our worker-owned coop board agreed that in order
to best protect the team, they need to rest. And the only way they can rest
is to close the shops. And we are paying the crew. This will cost us over
$25,000, not including lost profits. If you would like to contribute to our
team and help cover any of these expenses, we have setup a
GoFundMe page.
8/6/2020
After five months, A Slice of New York is *finally* hiring again (thanks COVID)!
Please
click here to fill out an application online and become a part of our
worker-owned cooperative.
8/4/2020
We brought back our lunch special! Effective immediately, any personal pie ordered
before 2pm will get a free soda -- that includes frozen personal pies! So let's
get back into the lunch spirit with free sodas!
7/21/2020
Update on the company 18% surcharge - At the last company meeting, the crew
(both members and non-members of the co-op) decided to split the current
surcharge with the business to help cover overhead and salaries. Half of
the surcharge (9% is actually 6% since we have to deduct sales tax and payroll
tax) goes directly to the team. Any cash tip is obviously 100% for the crew.
The remaining 9% (which is actually 8% after sales tax is deducted) covers
payroll increases from Jan 2020. Our planned menu increase in March was supposed
to cover this, but we held off due to the covid crisis. I know this is confusing
and am happy to explain more if you want to
reach out. We will be reviewing this on a monthly basis to direct as much as
we can to the crew. Thank you for your support during this incredibly difficult time.
7/15/2020
On July 13, 2020, we implemented the County's latest Social Distancing Protocols.
They will challenge us even more in our SJ/SC Stevens Creek location due to very limited
staffing requirements. Please understand that specifically Friday and Saturday
nights will be rough and wait times will be long. We encourage you to
try both locations or call in your orders early. The pandemic is real. Wear your
masks. Keep distance between yourself and others. Be kind and patient with each other.
Thanks for your ongoing support and understanding.
6/27/2020
Friends - if you had any weird pie experience with smell or taste over the
last week (6/18-6/26), please contact us, as our "waffle insert" vendor had a
quality issue -
info@aSliceOfNY.com
6/12/2020
Reminder,
ALL orders need to be placed via phone (no window or counter ordering).
We do this to minimize time in the shop to help prevent the spread of the virus.
If you come by and forgot to order ahead of time, simply call us on the phone. We
post our phone number in large numbers at both shops. Thanks for your understanding
and support.
6/7/2020
Effective Mon, 6/8,
Sunnyvale will open at 3pm everyday (except Sunday). We are
responding to customer business patterns. The reality is, lunch is not profitable
for our business right now, and we need to make sure we don't overwork our team. If
you would like to see us open again for Sunnvyale Saturday lunch, please email us
at-
info@aSliceOfNY.com
Sunnyvale- Tues-Thurs 3-9pm; Fri-Sat 3-10pm; Sun 12:30-7:30pm
San Jose hours are normal- Tues-Thurs 11am-10pm; Fri-Sat 11am-10pm; Sun 12:30-10pm
Both shops are closed on Mondays (as normal).
6/2/2020
Today was a very rough day for our shop. After speaking with many of our crew,
we identified a risk to our Social Distancing Protocols. Most current protests
do not allow for proper social distancing, many participants and law enforcement
not even wearing masks. To best ensure the safety of our team and our shops, we
are requiring anyone who participates in large group activities (like protests)
that can't adhere to Social Distancing Protocols the shops have committed to
follow, will need to self quarantine and get free COVID test with negative
results at least 48 hours after close contact. We respect and support everyone's
1st Amendment rights to protest and demonstrate free speech!
6/1/2020
Given the curfew in place in both Santa Clara and San Jose, we will be monitoring
conditions closely to ensure our crew is safe. We may close both shops early.
Please get your orders in before 7pm.
5/31/2020
We are not sure why people are showing up without face coverings to our San Jose/Santa
Clara (Stevens Creek) location. The County Order requires it. Yes, it is outside
our business in public space, and that is the only reason we have not been more assertive thus far.
However,
effective immediately, we will NOT serve anyone without a face covering
or mask. Thank you for protecting our crew.
5/25/2020
Yesterday, we lost a friend, a kind soul, and a part of the ASONY family. Today,
we started a
GoFundMe page
for Sahm. Please consider contributing if you can. Thank you.
5/24/2020
We lost one of our own today. Sahm joined our family over five years ago, was a founding
member of our co-op, was the first Chair of our Board, and was the initial trainer
of new-hires for a good portion of our team these past few years. Due to a non-virus related
illness, he was abruptly taken away from us today. We closed our shops for the rest of the
day to grieve for our co-worker, our friend, and our asonyfam - chosen family.
Be free Sahm. We love you and will never forget your larger-than-life self.
5/22/2020
Santa Clara County updated their order to *require* BOTH customers and workers
to wear face coverings while working. Our team has been wearing face coverings since March 31,
and we have required our customers to wear face coverings since April 20.
5/4/2020
Santa Clara County extended the shelter in place order through May 31. The main
difference from the prior order is the *recomendation* for customers and workers
to wear face coverings. Our team has been wearing face coverings since March 31,
and we have required our customers to wear face coverings since April 20.
5/2/2020
We want to thank all of our customers for the incredible support you have
provided these past "few" weeks. During our busy times, the phones can ring
like crazy, all four lines will ring, we put you on hold for long times, and it is hard
on all of us. And we'd like to acknowledge and thank you for respecting the
social distancing guidelines and mask requirements in place. You are doing great!
4/28/2020
Federal Loan update - Last week, we found out we were approved for the PPP loan
in the amount of $245K, the initial $10K EIDL loan, and we got granted a $5K
grant from the City of Santa Clara Small Business Grant program! Even though our
business is down over 35% since this all started, we had a great week. The PPP
loan covers the costs of our payroll, utilities, and rent for both shops for
eight (8) weeks...yes, our expenses are that high! These loans will primarily
be used to pay our team and the other fixed expenses. NBC Bay Area aired two
segments on our shop. One on
April 20 and the second just two days later on
April 22.
4/21/2020
Today, we officially launched a program to help feed people, starting with ER
hospital staff and families in need. We hope to expand this scope, and we are
starting off small. Our basic mission is this-
Community Meal Initiative (CMI) is a grassroots collaboration of community
organizers and small business leaders focused on providing nutritious meals
for hospital ER teams and at-risk families. Packages range from $300-350 which
create 20-25 meals, and will be delivered directly to those in need.
We hope you will support us and
share this program with your friends and family.
We are working with a handful of local restaurants in the area, and you can read
about them on our GoFundMe page. This is part of the larger Feed the Frontline
Santa Clara County initiative.
4/19/2020
Two announcements -
1. Starting Mon, 4/20, we are
REQUIRING all customers to wear a face covering
or mask when coming in to our Sunnyvale shop for pick-up.
2. We are officially offering frozen, take-and-bake 10" personal pies! They are
the same price as our regular personal pies and ready to put in your freezer.
They are 85-90% cooked and take less than 10 min to prepare, right from the
freezer! Never be without ASONY goodness, not even on a Monday!
Here is our
guide on cooking instructions.
4/14/2020
Today, we will be thermal scanning all employees for fever. Our no-contact
thermometers arrived today, and all team members will check their temperatures
before starting work. While we considered testing all customers, we decided
against this as it would encourage close contact, impacting our six-foot social
distancing guidelines.
We respectfully ask all customers to protect our team by
wearing a face mask/covering when entering our Sunnyvale location, but we are not
requiring it at this time; we may change this policy in the future.
4/6/2020
New Sunnyvale Hours. Starting 4/7, we are changing Tues-Thurs hours.
Our Sunnyvale lunch business has been pretty grim. After assessing the last
3 weeks, we've determined it's not worth being open for lunch hours in the
Sunnyvale shop. This week we're changing
Tues-Thurs hours to 3-9pm. The crew
will start at 2pm so feel free to start placing orders then! And no, there's
nothing wrong with a pizza snack before traditional dinner time!
Thank you for your ongoing support! Reminder
on 3/24 we eliminated the tipping
option on credit card transactions to make them safe and touch-less, and have
added an 18% surcharge that goes to the team! Also Stevens Creek hours remain
the same for now, but please check often as things are pretty fluid these days.
Also note, we will be closed on Easter Sunday, 4/12. Be safe!
4/3/2020
ASONY has implemented a number of new protocols to further keep our team safe and
help make your experience with us a safe and efficient one. Due to additional
safety measures, orders may take longer to fill. Please be patient. If you would
like to see an overview of both shops and what we put in place, please look
here for short videos in
San Jose/Santa Clara
and in
Sunnyvale.
You can see the Social Distancing Protocol documents for
San Jose/Santa Clara
and
Sunnyvale.
Our team started wearing masks/bandanas effective March 31, 2020, so don't
be nervous! None of our crew are ill; these are measures we are doing to protect them
and ensure their safety, to create the safest working environment, and
of course, as a result, a better place for our customers. You can see
a little video
we put together for the team, and it also talks about the surcharge we implemented.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
3/27/2020
Both shops are OPEN. We have still do not have slices, but we have a pretty
good alternative - the 10" personal pie. It is priced just like a Gluten Free.
We are even looking at it for take-and-bake frozen, along with frozen dough balls.
Stay tuned this weekend while we try to create a program highlighting it. Lots of
positive responses. Check this site for current hours. A slow night might cause us
to close up early, so please call first.
3/24/2020
Both shops are OPEN. To further reduce the risk to customers, we will be
implementing a no-touch credit card system for all users of ApplePay, GooglePay,
RF tap cards, or other wireless pay device. We are disabling the ability to
tip on the terminal and signatures will no longer be required.
Tipping will no
longer be possible when paying with credit card. In order to cover the lost income
to our team, we are implementing an 18% surcharge that will be 100% distributed to
our team members. If you would like to tip more, please bring cash with you
at pickup. We thank you for your continued support in this very difficult and time.
Please be patient if the lines are busy or things take a bit longer to make.
We are trying to find way to protect each other and you.
3/21/2020
Both shops are OPEN. In order to better protect our team,
we are discontinuing
slices effective immediately. In San Jose/Santa Clara, we are closing our lobby with
pickup through our sliding window, like a real NY pizza shop!
Also, in Sunnyvale, we are reducing the number of people inside
to five (5) and closing the restrooms to the public. Beer is available to go in
cans (please buy beer to go in Sunnyvale!). Maintaining updated hours, so please
order before 9:30pm.
3/18/2020
We are OPEN. Yesterday was slow. We need to adjust our hours to meet the
demand. So effective immediately, the
San Jose/Santa Clara shop on Stevens Creek
will close at 10pm (last order 9:30pm)
3/17/2020
We are OPEN. Per the Bay Area-wide mandate, and to retain a safe social distance
among folks inside the shops, we are limiting the number of people picking up
orders at a time. 7 MAX in Stevens Creek and 20 MAX in Sunnyvale (may be adjusted +/-).
We are also asking for you to use your CREDIT or DEBIT card (no cash please).
Please be kind to each other. Please be patient with our process.
And please
tip our crew well.
3/13/2020
We continue to follow the guidelines of the Santa Clara County Health Department.
You can find the latest details here (please remember to wash your hands!!!)-
Santa Clara County COVID-19 resource page.
3/7/2020
Effective Sunday 3/8, all orders will be for takeout/pickup only, with
no dining in. We are following guidelines from Santa Clara County and
will update our operations as needed. Please click on the link below for more
DETAILS.

A Slice of New York is now a worker cooperative!
ASONY has transitioned to a worker cooperative (co-op)! This will help us achieve
our goal of being a progressive Bay Area business, one that supports its
employees, the community, and provides great food and service. Membership is
open to all employees and is completely optional.
What is a co-op?
A
worker cooperative is a form of employee ownership. What makes co-ops
unique is they are businesses both owned and governed by their workers.
Strategic decision making is democratic, adhering to the
principle of one member, one vote. Profits are earned based on hours worked.
Worker co-ops create long-term stable jobs, have sustainable business
practices, and are connected and accountable to their community.
What does our cooperative look like?
Our daily operations remain the same. Our original owners and founders,
Kirk and Marguerite, continue their key roles within the company, with Kirk
taking on the role of General Manager, and ASONY is now governed by its owner/members!
This means that co-op members make decisions about things like workplace
governance, annual budget, company direction, and strategy. They also share
in the profits and risks of the company on an equal basis. Not all our staff
are members of the cooperative, and we may always be a mix of members and
non-members, but we strive for an ownership culture and a democratically
governed workplace.
Why?
As a company, we believe in the
democratic process (see video) and our goal is to provide
stability and growth opportunity. We believe in a just economy. Our purpose
in becoming a cooperative is to make, and keep, ASONY an enduring company
offering members job stability and career opportunities in the local
community and in the local food industry. We believe the best way for
ASONY to continue to grow and prosper is to make sure the focus of our
business is on both the quality of our product and
the people who make, serve, and sell it.

Project {EQUITY} for all their help!), please have a look

All business operations are back to normal again. We have a *very* clean shop
and our crew is eager to take care of you. Thanks for your support during this
very challenging time.
Oct 12, 2019 (Sat)
Saturday update for Stevens Creek- tldr- We will be open by 2pm after cleaning up!
See you over a couple of slices! 🍕🍕
Full version- This past week we have been dealing with a pest problem that stemmed
from the bar next door. A couple of weeks ago they were shut down by the County
Dept of Environmental Health for 7 days and within a week, we started to get
impacted (after receiving 2 clean reports from the DEH). So, we proactively
self-closed last Sunday to make sure we addressed any sanitation issue on our
side. We had a pest control company in every night, deep-cleaned every day, and
as a final precaution, decided to fog/bomb the shop last night. Today we are
thoroughly cleaning (again) and will have a late opening. We are shooting for
2pm, but it may be sooner if you happen to be walking by or shopping at the
Surplus Store. Closing shop for several days has cost us in many ways, but we
are VERY serious about health and sanitation. This is the only time since
opening 13 years ago that we’ve needed to take these measures, and we are very
grateful for the continued support of our community! See you over a
couple of slices! 🍕😎
Oct 11, 2019 (Fri)
Stevens Creek shop is OPEN. We will be open all day. We will open at 2pm on Saturday.
We hope this will be the last time our hours are impacted. Thank you for your support.
Oct 10, 2019 (Thurs)
Stevens Creek shop still closed. We are targeting Friday. Check back
for updates.
Oct 9, 2019 (Wed)
Stevens Creek shop still closed. Will open Thursday at the earliest. Check back
for updates.
Oct 8, 2019 (Tues)
We are opening our Sunnvyale shop until midnight until our Stevens Creek
shop is open. Thanks for your understanding and support.
Oct 6, 2019 (Sun)
As the Founder and General Manager of A Slice of New York, I take pride in providing
a clean and safe experience for all our customers. During our daily inspections,
we uncovered a sanitation concern, so we took immediate action to close our shop
until we identify and eliminate the source, and thoroughly sanitize our space.
While we expect this to be resolved quickly, we will not operate until I am
convinced we have solved the problem to keep and maintain the extremely high
quality standards you expect from our business.
Thank you for your patience and support.

Effective September 24, 2019, ASONY has SUSPENDED all delivery services--catering
still available. We continue to see unpredictable results from drivers (not on time,
no bag, lack of caring), and we cannot accept that level of service from any company
charging our customers a premium and charging us a significant fee. We will consider
starting a service in the future should these services strive for a better solution.
We thank all the many customers who tried out this service while we tested it. We
understand you like the convenience of delivery and are willing to pay more for it. However,
with these services charging our business 20%+ and charging you 10%+ in fees, we cannot
in good conscious support this effort. We hope you will continue to call in your
orders and come into our shop to be taken care of.
We further understand we may lose your business because we no longer have a way for you
to remotely get our products. Please reach out to us at -
delivery@asliceofny.com
and give us your feedback. The current systems are really not equitable to our business, and
the service levels are not acceptable to our standards. We are happy to hear your ideas
and suggestions, and please know we are not going to create our own delivery service.
Thank you for 13 years of support. Our fellow Employee Owners strive every day
to create the experience you demand of us and to which we hold ourselves accountable.
We are always open to your feedback and input, so please reach out via email
at -

December 2018
We are excited to share we have partnered with Caviar. While we have not officially
announced it, the service is active (TESTING) and we are asking you to give it a try. We need your
help in making sure the service is working for you and is reliable. Service is ONLY happening
out of our Sunnyvale location. If you are not close to that location, keep that in mind. Maybe
even check our FAQ to see how best to reheat your slices (e.g., toaster oven, skillet, etc.).
To try us out,
please use the web link delivery.asony.com,
any time you order online. The website (vs. the Caviar application)
saves our employee
owned business almost 50% in fees. Your experience will be the same.
Be sure to keep us informed of your experience (e.g., Did the order arrive on time?
Was your order still warm? Did the driver use a pizza bag?).
Please email us at delivery@asliceofny.com
and share. We will be closely reviewing the costs, but in ALL cases, delivery is
more expensive than coming in to pick up your order. We are not trying to make
more
on delivery; rather, we want to keep our profit margins the same.
We want to hear from you. We want to make this a great delivery experience and
a win-win for everyone!
Thank you! - ASONY Team

Reduction in Shop Hours - SUNNYVALE
A Slice of New York and A Slice of New York - Sunnyvale prides itself on making
great pizza and providing memorable experiences for our awesome customers.
Hiring great people continues to be a challenge and we do not want to overwork
the stellar crew we have.
Until we can add solid team members to provide the level of service we demand,
we are reducing hours at our Sunnyvale location. Sundays we are closing at
7:30pm with last order at 7:00pm. This reduction will expand if necessary.
We want to be your go-to pizza shop. If you know anyone interested in working
for our employee-owned cooperative and think they're a fit with our environment
and culture, please contact us
jobs@aSliceOfNY.com.
Thanks for your ongoing support of our small business!
DoorDash Fiasco - DoorDash Terminates Relationship with ASONY
10/10/18
We are disappointed to let you know that our small business isn't worth the time
or trouble for DoorDash to manage. After submitting two serious complaints about
driver issues (many of them were fine), we received the following email from DoorDash
stating they no longer want to do business with us.
"Based on the incident reports which have been filed regarding A Slice of New York
and our review of the circumstances, we would like to inform you that we will
be parting ways with A Slice of New York. DoorDash requires all of our merchants
to uphold and share in our commitment regarding maintaining a safe work
environment, free from any intimidation or harassment. Based on these incidents
and a review of our current agreement with A Slice of New York, we are hereby
providing you with notice of termination, effective immediately."
It has been over two weeks since I had communication with them.
There has been ZERO
follow-up from them to the two incident reports I filed, one about an aggressive,
disrespectful driver, and the second about a driver who stole from us. And when
I asked about the status of these and what was happening, we received the above email.
No phone call. No follow-up. Nothing.
Even though we had many issues reported around driver lateness, drivers not being assigned,
lack of professionalism, disrespect, and general frustration,
I was still willing
to provide consistent feedback, speak to their Merchant Support on the phone in India,
and put up with their technology and Merchant Portal not functioning. I wanted
to make it work because our customers use their platform.
And, I am not willing to simply accept quality of our product being negatively impacted
by some drivers who don't really care, or not identify issues with drivers who don't
have the basics to do the job effectively (like a pizza bag). Was I too vocal? Is it
unreasonable for me to request pizza delivery drivers have pizza bags to keep
our product warm? Should I simply not care about food that leaves the
shop because it's already paid for? Should I not care that drivers show up late
and are unapologetic about it?
We heard you want delivery; we have heard it for over a decade. We will find
a way to get a quality-based solution. Thanks for your patience.
Kirk Vartan
General Manager
9/26/18
Due to multiple and serious issues with DoorDash drivers (e.g., disrespect, lack of
professionalism, and stealing), we have temporarily halted operations with DoorDash.
There are two formal cases filed, and one may turn into a criminal case based on what is
currently known.
A Slice of New York was founded on principals that are not negotiable, two being
open and honest communication and mutual respect. We do not feel these qualities
are being met by this service at this time. We are trying to work it out as we speak, but until
we do, service has been suspended. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.
We will keep you updated.

9/11/18
We tested DoorDash today (9/11/18), and it was much better. Still some issues, but
we have a pretty good idea on how to work with it. Please let us know if you have
issues by reaching out to us directly -
delivery@asliceofny.com.
If you want delivery, please use the following (dead link) and DO NOT use the DoorDash
app directly to order from us. Simply click this link (or bookmark it) to access our
DoorDash menu. It will save us over 50% of the commission DoorDash takes from us
and will keep that revenue in our business. Your experience will be the same.
Please understand that DoorDash takes 25% of the order revenue from us. On top of that, the
additional taxes, tip, and fees do not go to ASONY. We are looking at how this significant
fee will impact our business, and we might have to raise prices specifically for DoorDash service.
Once you use DoorDash, we no longer know who you are! We want to stay connected to our
friends and customers, so please let us know what your experience is by emailing us
at -
delivery@asliceofny.com. We want
to hear from you directly, whether it is good, bad, issues, questions, etc. Please keep in mind,
the crew making your pizza are no longer able to get a tip from you.
We welcome your thoughts. These are hard times for everyone, but incredibly hard
for our team to live in this area and for us to properly compensate them.
Thank you for all your years of support.
